Please bring your instruments and music books to school on the first day. Read below for an email from Mrs. Grabot & Mrs. Eikenberry about our middle school band program:
--------------------------------------------------------------- Good morning, and welcome back to another school year! I am pleased to see how many students we have in the Cadet Band this year! To help you all understand the transition from grade school, I will explain a few things about how the middle school band program works. First of all, band is scheduled as a class during the school day. Students will meet in the band room every day at the same time as a full group. This means they need their instruments! They should start bringing these instruments on Thursday. We have a storage room in the band room where they may keep their instruments during the day. This is only a temporary storage space - students are expected to bring their instruments home to PRACTICE! There may be times they leave it here, but NOT every night. You have put time and money into your child's musical education, you should expect a musical return on that investment! Also - please make sure your child has a name tag on their case - although rare, instruments have disappeared from extended visits to the storage room. There are also many cases that look alike, and students will confuse them and take someone else's by accident. And PLEASE remind your student to NEVER leave their instrument in the school hallways. We do carry basic supplies here in the band room for student convenience, like reeds and oils and swabs. Please visit the band website, www.beachparkbands.weebly.com for more detailed lists and prices. I may also be able to help you find less expensive options - just let me know! I understand that costs can be overwhelming for some, and the internet offers unlimited "cheap" options. Unfortunately, cheap can be detrimental to your child's success. Please let me guide you in the direction of quality materials. Lessons are done as pull-outs during the day, on a rotating basis. This is when your child will receive individual assignments and attention to help them become better musicians. They do receive grades for lessons. Please note: the band directors and classroom teachers do communicate frequently, and we work hard to insure musical AND academic success. Your child WILL have band homework. It is never overwhelming - unless they choose not to do it. We have a few concerts scheduled throughout the year. Please mark your calendars! There are not a lot of performances, but the ones we do have are required. This is a performance based class, and our "final exams" are our concerts. The Beach Park Band Boosters do a few fundraisers throughout the year. It is very important that your child participate to the best of his, hers (or your!) ability. Monies raised help fund activities like band camp, pool parties, and trips. We also use this money for instrument repair and maintenence, music, supplies and instrument purchases. We try to provide the very best for your students, but we cannot do it without the fundraisers. If you are interested in joining our Booster team, please feel free to join us for any of our meetings that are marked on our band calendar - all are welcome! I will try to send out frequent (but not too frequent!) emails to keep you posted on our activities. All of this information and more can be found on our band website listed above. Thank you for your time, and have a great school year! If you ever have any questions, please let us know! Mrs. Grabot, [email protected] Mrs. Eikenberry, [email protected]
