Lessons & Grading Policies
LESSONS All Beginner, Cadet, Concert, and Symphonic band students, in addition to meeting as a full band, will have a 30-minute small group lesson once a week. Lessons involve both playing and some written material. Students are given weekly assignments that they are expected to complete in addition to practicing band materials. When it is necessary for a student to miss a lesson, it is the STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY to inform the lesson teacher. Failure to notify the lesson teacher will result in an unexcused band absence which will be reflected in the student’s grade.
GRADING POLICIES Beginner Band students earn grades through attendance at lessons and rehearsals, and through continued effort and improvement on their instruments. They receive written reports from their director every trimester with suggested hints for improvement.
Cadet, Concert and Symphonic Band students earn grades through lesson attendance, performances, and participation:
40% lesson preparation and attendance
40% performances
20% daily participation/quizzes/scales
CONCERT ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED. The director must receive notice of any absences AT LEAST TWO WEEKS PRIOR to any event, and MUST BE EXCUSED BY THE DIRECTOR. This is a class, and all performances are for a grade. We send out the calendar at the beginning of the year so that all families are aware of the performances. Sports events are not excused absences.
