Northern Illinois Music Conference (NIMCon)
Solo and Ensemble Contest
Solo and Ensemble Contest is an opportunity for students to perform as a soloist or in a small ensemble, receive feedback from esteemed music educators, and earn medals for their performance.
This contest takes place every February. Although the contest is open to all Concert and Symphonic Band students, the directors reserve the right to encourage or discourage participation based on the individual’s musical readiness. A great deal of time is needed to prepare for this event, and the director may feel that the student’s efforts would be better spent working on personal development.
The director’s responsibilities:
Organizational Contest is an opportunity for students to perform together as an ensemble, receive feedback from esteemed music educators, and earn medals for their performance.
The NIMCon Organizational Contest is held at a different host school every March. All of the NIMCon member schools participate annually. Bands are rated on a graded scale based on their performance. Tuning, rhythmic accuracy, balance, style and musical interpretation are all evaluated by highly qualified and respected judges, and bands are given a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place divisional rating. Students receive medals, and the school receives a plaque. Participation is required by all members of the Symphonic Band. Concert Band members may also be required to participate.
